String Ensemble

The West Instrumental Program offers students an opportunity to participate in a variety of groups, both curricular and co-curricular. Our curricular groups include the WIND ENSEMBLE, which is a class that students are chosen for through the audition process, and the SYMPHYONIC BAND, which is open to any student the plays a wind or percussion instrument. The STRING ORCHESTRA is open to any student that plays a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass). There are also classes in MUSIC THEORY and AP MUSIC THEORY. Co-curricular options include JAZZ ENSEMBLE, PIT ORCHESTRA,STRING ENSEMBLE, (chamber string group), SMALL ENSEMBLES and our WEST PEP BAND which plays at home West football games. Our groups perform three school concerts each year along with other performances that include festivals, competitions and performances in the community. MEET THE DIRECTOR

Mr. Jim Mark is in his 26th year of teaching instrumental music in the NJ public schools. Prior to coming to West in 2000, he spent 14 years teaching in Millville, NJ. He has been a guest conductor for the All-South Jersey Junior High Band(1997), the Region III Senior High Jazz Enemble(1998,2003), the Olympic Conference Junior High Honors Band (1999) and the Cumberland County High School Honors Band(1997). He hosted the 2003 and 2004 Region III Jazz Concerts here at West. He holds a B.S. in Music Ed. from West Chester University. Next to his family and being the West director, his other passion is being an avid sports fan and follows the Flyers, Phillies, and Redskins, as well as the West Chester University Roller Hockey team!
