The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band are the two curricular bands at West. Each meets one period per day and is a full credited course. Wind and Percussion instruments make up these organizations. The group does not include piano, string or electronic instruments.
WIND ENSEMBLE
To become a member of this class the student must complete a successful audition, which takes place in early February each year for the next school year. The group is primarily for 10-12 grade students but exceptional(All-South Jersey, etc.) incoming 9th grade students may audition based on a recommendation by their middle school director. The ensemble explores the best of the wind band repertoire. Along with the three school concerts the ensemble performs in other festivals and competitions throughout the year. The group also combines with the Orchestra at least once a year to explore a different variety of musical expression.
SYMPHONIC BAND
This class is open to any student in grades 9-12 that plays a wind or percussion instrument and NO AUDITION IS REQUIRED! Most incoming 9th grade students will schedule this course. The band performs a variety of concert band literature and combines with the Wind Ensemble throughout the year, especially for the Spring Trip/Festival each year. The band performs at the three school concerts each year. Basic instrumental techniques, designed to develop the overall musicianship of the student, are explored in this class. It is hoped that students will eventually audition for wind ensemble, although it is not required.
